Amsterdam offers various forms of shelter: from emergency night shelters to long-term care beds, for which a social care authorization is required. After a screening by the GGD and the municipality, it’s determined what kind of support someone needs, intensive guidance, protected housing, or a path towards independent living.
The people Denice and Thomas meet vary widely in background. Some find housing within a year, others need several years of support. “Sometimes, it’s already a victory when someone can simply take a breath again,” says Denice.
The evening unfolded differently than planned. Crisis calls came in: a confused man from Norway in a wheelchair, and later a man from Germany who has been homeless in the Netherlands for years. Together with the crisis service, we visited them, hoping to bring some calm. Such situations show just how unpredictable this work can be and how essential flexibility and compassion are.
That’s what drives Denice and Thomas. They offer more than practical help, they are sometimes the only familiar faces in someone’s life.
Working at night means constant improvisation. Services are closed, situations change rapidly, and emergencies can arise anywhere. Yet there is also warmth. Most of the people Denice and Thomas meet are grateful — for a listening ear, a smile, a moment of humanity.
Their work can feel like trying to empty the ocean with a spoon, but it is also filled with hope. Every Shelterbag, every conversation, every small act of kindness makes a difference.
Many people living on the streets have no ID, bank card, or health insurance. The team helps with these basics, arranges appointments with institutions, and when needed distributes Shelterbags and Sheltersuits. At night, the city falls quiet, but the work of teams like HVO-Querido continues. They are the bridge between the streets and care, between despair and hope.
